a foster carers experience

After being involved as a volunteer with the Trust for two years, it became apparent that there was always a 'sticky' dog in the kennels. This is a dog that for whatever reason was always being overlooked for re-homing.

I started off slowly by taking our first “semi” foster dog, Govern, who through no fault of his own was returned to the Trust 3 times and was starting to feel very sorry for himself. He started with weekend stays, which then extended into long weekends. This gave us the opportunity to get to know him and we were very happy to report that he would be a great pet. As hard as it was to let him go, he happily found his forever home.

Next came the 'big' step of fostering properly and so came into our lives Sparrow - what a boy. Couldn't fault him except for stealing our hearts, but he too found a home only to be returned to the kennels but then was re-homed quickly and he has spent his holidays with us since.

The dogs that require fostering usually need work with their socialising sometimes with other breeds and sometimes with humans too, or it could be that they simply are unhappy in kennels. It is a rewarding job, which requires patience and time, as a foster dog is with you until it finds its 'forever' home. We have had one foster dog with us for as little as two weeks. At present we have Bert who came into our home May 2010.

The Trust asks that you actively promote the dog and you are able to bring the dog along for viewings at the kennels and to walks and awarenesses if they can cope.

The dogs have all taken a piece of our hearts, but left us with fantastic memories of their time with us. I feel so lucky to have got to know the dogs and would recommend fostering.

So thank you to, Govern, Sparrow, Bailey, Sparrow, Zoe, Heidi, Bitsy (who we adopted, just couldn't resist) and of course Bert. Lastly an even bigger thank you to my 'pack' who take it all in their stride, Tom, Izzy, Megan and Bitsy.
